About Juneau
Juneau, located in the Panhandle, is Alaska's capital and second largest city. Founded by gold miners in 1880, it was named for Joe Juneau, one of the first prospectors to discover gold in the are.
Juneau, often called the longest city in the world, occupies a long and narrow stretch of land that slopes from the foot of Mount Juneau down to a bustling waterfront on Gastineau Channel. Douglas Island, in the channel, also in part of the city. The mountains cut the city off from the mainland, so visitors must come in by boat or airplane. Attractions include the Alaska State Museam, St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, and a fascinating historic district.
