About Ketchikan
Katchikan has a few firsts. It was the first city and the first Alaskan port for cruise ships. It is also the first city you come to on the inside Passage of Southeast Alaska, 500 miles north of Seattle.
Dating back to the late 1800's, when a man by the name of Snow built a saltery for Salmon, it is known as the salmon capitol of the world. On the heels of the saltery came mining and timber production. By 1900, Ketchikan was officially incorporated with a population of 800. Now, nearly 8,000 citizens call it home and it has a summer tourism of mostly elderly people.
