About Kingston
The first capital of New York State, Kingston was named as a safer alternative to Albany during the early days of the Revolutionary War. Ironically, the British never reached Albany but did burn Kingston in the early years of the war. The capital reverted to Albany at the conclusion of hostilities.

The source of most of the bluestone that was used to build the sidewalks of New York City, Kingston was also a vital transportation hub for the delivery of coal to New York. The Delaware and Hudson canal was built to transport Pennsylvania coal to New York through the port of Kingston.

Today, Kingston has carefully preserved historic buildings and a large number of art galleries. Recently rated as one of the best places for artists to live by "Business Week" magazine, Kingston is a vibrant town with an engaging sense of community.
