About Lafayette
Lafayette, Indiana was platted in1825 by a river trader by the name of William Digby. Shortly after it was made the county seat for Tippecanoe County. Like many small frontier towns it was named after General Lafayette, who was a French military hero that helped the American Army during the American Revolutionary War.
Most of the economy of Lafayette is centered on the academic and industrial activities of Purdue University, which is located in West Lafayette. There are some private industries in the city such as Wabash National, world’s largest manufacturer of semi-truck trailers, and Subaru of Indiana Automotive.
One of the biggest attractions in Lafayette is the Columbian Park Zoo, probably due to the fact that admission to the zoo is free. The zoo houses over 190 animals and 79 different species while offering a variety of educational programs that are set to inspire appreciation for the world’s wildlife.
