About Laguna Hills
A city in Orange County, Laguna Hills was once one of the major land grants of the California Ranchero era. An adobe monument commemorating Juan Avila, the Don of Rancho Niguel, forms part of the historical tradition of Laguna Hills. The 13,000 acres of the ranch was later subdivided in the post-colonial era.

Laguna Hills officially incorporated in 1991 and then annexed the North Laguna Hills area in 1996 to form the current city. In 2000, another 149 residential acres were added with the annexation of the westside.

Within Laguna Hills is an important fossil site, the Costeau Park area that was discovered by high school students and is older than the Le Brea Tar Pits. Fossil Reef Park protects a large limestone shelf that is rich in 17 million year old fossils.
