About Los Angeles
A global megacity of nearly 15 million people, the metropolis of Los Angeles is one of the largest in the world. The "City of Angels" was the regional capital during the colonial era and has grown apace due to its diverse and powerful economic engines.

The discovery of oil in nearby Long Beach in the 1920s began the boom for the city; the relocation of the entertainment industry to Hollywood in the 1930s ensured lasting fame and continuous growth for the city known as L.A. The establishment of the aerospace industry added to the draw of the city as a major center of commerce and industry.

The cultural mix of Los Angeles is remarkably diverse and the neighborhoods reflect the ethnicity and affluence of the residents. Koreatown, Chinatown, Little Tokyo and Los Feliz are pockets of ethnic distinction while Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades and Bel Air, some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in California, stand in stark contrast to South Central and the Barrios, some of the poorest.
