About Marion
Marion, Indiana spreads its economy between agriculture and manufacturing. Surrounded by the “Corn Belt” it is no wonder that agriculture is a significant part of the areas economy. Marion also has the distinction of being the town where the paper plate was born. As well as producing automotive parts, foundry products, wire, cable and machinery Marion is also home to five out of the nine paper plate plants in the nation.

One of ten National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers lies in Marion. Unfortunalty due to a lack of interest in restoring the original buildings the treatment hospital, greenhouse and cadet quarters are all scheduled for demolition, because they are a current hazard to Veterans there is no choice but to destroy the buildings.

In 1930 on of the last confirmed lynchings of blacks in the Northern United States was reported in Marion. Thomas Shipp, Abram Smith and James Cameron were all charged with the beating of a white man and the raping of his girlfriend. The three men were dragged out of jail and severely beaten before Shipp and Smith were hanged. Before Cameron could be hanged someone else stepped up and claimed that Cameron was innocent. Although Cameron survived he was later convicted of accessory to murder and served 4 years in jail.
