About Martinez
Across the Carquinez Straits from the city of Benicia, Martinez is a Bay Area city named after the original landowner during the Colonial Ranchero era. Ygnacio Martinez was granted the property he called Rancho El Pinole and his descendants lived in a restored adobe building at the center of town.

The historic town center contains a number of restored buildings from the days when the town was a weigh center and an important stop on the Pony Express. While the town of Benicia across the harbor was growing into an important center of county administration, Martinez remained a backwater.

The town did contribute two important elements of American culture however. The Martinez is a drink considered the "Grandfather of the Martini" while the Yankee Clipper, Joe DiMaggio, grew up in Martinez.
