About Martinsville
Perry Magnus Blankenship completed the courthouse in Martinsville, Indiana in 1859 and is one of the few pre Civil War courthouses still standing. 40 years later in 1899 Eugene Sherman turned much of the swampy land around Martinsville into fisheries. Dubbed the “Goldfish Capital of the World” Martinsville still has several large fisheries and continues to sell fish to many different parts of the world.

Martinsville’s sanitariums, or artesian mineral water spas, are well known for their healing powers. Over the course of 100 years a dozen different sanitariums were in operation, including the first black spa.

However the one thing that Martinsville is most notorious for is the murder of Carol Jenkins. In 1968 when Carol Jenkins, a 20-year-old black woman, was murdered many locals refused to talk about the incident, and although everyone assumed someone in the community had killed her there was speculation of a cover up. Years later in 2002 it was determined that a Hendricks County man and his friend were passing through Martinsville when they came across Carol Jenkins and murdered her. The man was connected to the Ku Klux Klan but not in any way to Martinsville.
