About Mayville
Formed on the watershed between Lake Erie and Chautaugua Lake, the town of Chautauqua is referred to as the "Mother Town of Chautauqua County." The original settlement of the county, all other towns were formed from Chautauqua, an Iroquois word which means "squeeezed between two bags" a reference to the narrow and hilly watershed formed between the two lakes.

One such place formed from the original town is Mayville, the county seat of Chautauqua County. Named by agents of the Holland Land Company who, finding themselves at an impasse, decided to name it after the infant daughter of one of the agents, Mayville was the original settlement of the area.
