About Merrillville
Merrillville, Indiana is located on what used to the Potawatomi Indians woodlands. In 1834 a clearing was created for ceremonial purposes and the area was called McGwinn Village but that only lasted for a year. Jeremiah Wiggins settled the area and named it Wiggins Point; it became a well-known stop for wagon trains heading to Joliet, Indiana. Still later after Wiggins died the town was named Centerville. However eventually it was renamed Merrillville after two brothers, Dudley and William Merrill, who were very active in the community.
