About Michigan City
In the 1830’s Isaac C. Elston purchased the land that is now Michigan City, Indiana. Elston High School was after him. It wasn’t until 1836 that the town was actually incorporated; at that point it had 1500 residents compared to the 32,900 citizens of Michigan City today.

Michigan City is home to the Old Michigan City Light. This light is one of the few lighthouses in Indiana. The largest shopping mall in Michigan City is named after the lighthouse and contains many outlet stores.

The Washington Park Zoo is in Michigan City and sits upon a hilly sandy dune close to the southeastern tip of Lake Michigan. 90 species and over 220 animals are featured in the zoo. The zoo has been modernized so that the animals are in natural setting with botanical plants.
