About Milan
Milan, Indiana got its beginnings in the 1820’s at a crossroads just north of what is now the town. In 1836 Isaac Hancock, Stephen Harding, and George Walker laid out the town. The name Milan came from the German settlers who were very into the grape culture and the processing of wine, they named the town after the winemaking area of Milan, Italy. During the early days of the railroad Milan was a main supplier of the wood that kept the engines running.

In 1954, Milan, Indiana was a quiet rural town in the southeastern part of Indiana, with a high school of 161 total students, 75 being boys. But it became the scene of one of the greatest basketball stories in history. A basketball team from a tiny high school in the farmlands of Milan rose against all odds to win the state basketball championship. Of course the team is the Hoosiers and their championship season was the background for the 1986 blockbuster movie Hoosiers.
