About Mineola
Taken from a native word meaning "pleasant village" the name of Mineola is shortened from Miniolagamika. The flat, grassy plains of central Long Island were known as Hempstead from the time of Henry Hudson's land claim in the name of the Dutch East Indies Company. That name still sticks with the region, as Mineola is in the town of North Hempstead.
Mineola was selected as the county seat of Nassau County in 1898 and Governor Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of the Nassau County Court House in 1900.The grassy plains and strong winds made the area a favorite with early aeronauts, including the Wright Brothers, and Charles Lindbergh started his historic flight across the Atlantic from nearby Roosevelt Field.
