About Mishawaka
Mishawaka, Indiana is a growing commercial city located next to South Bend. The Princess City, Mishawaka, lies along the St. Joseph River. Iron was discovered in the town in the 1830’s and many miners came to mine it, making it large enough to be incorporated. In 1872 a huge fire destroyed much of the business district, but the citizens rebuilt and attracted new industries such as The Dodge Manufacturing Company, Perkins Windmills, and the Mishawaka Woolen and Rubber Company.

There is a legend regarding the name of the city. Mishawaka was the daughter of Shawnee Chief Elkhart and the Shawnee’s were given the permission to settle on Potawatomi lands, but problems arose when Potawatomi Chief Grey Wolf fell in love with Mishawaka. She rejected him and fell in love with a trapper by the name of Dead shot. This caused a war between the two tribes and Mishawaka was captured. Dead shot and Grey Wolf eventually fought to the death, but not before Grey Wolf stabbed Mishawaka. She recovered but later died at age 32 and the town is said to be named after this legendary woman.
