About Modesto
A regular honoree of the "Treed City Award", Modesto is surrounded by some of the best farmland in California. Situated north of Sacramento and the county seat of Stanislaus County, the city of Modesto tries hard to live up to the origins of its name.

The name of the city was originally offered to William C. Rolston, a California financier, but at the naming ceremony he graciously declined the offer. A Spanish speaking railroad worker in attendance at the ceremony protested that Rolston was "muy modesto" or "too modest" and the name Modesto was applied to the city instead.

Modesto's favorite son has a particularly hard time staying modest. Filmaker George Lucas, of "Star Wars" fame, set his coming of age drama "American Graffiti" in his home town and a downtown tribute to Lucas reflects the theme of the movie.
