About Monroe
Named after the fifth President of the United States James Monroe, the town of Monroe was orginally created as the town of Cheesecocks. This absurd moniker was taken from the native word for highlands, Chesekook, referring to the hills and mountains through which the Hudson River flowed. Fortunately for future residents, Cheesecocks became Monroe in 1818.

The cheese connection still remains intact however. The Monroe Cheese Company began turning out production of Velveeta, a processed cheese product, in 1918. Later sold to Kraft, the processed cheese slices that garnish most burgers are made from an invention in a town once called Cheesecocks.

Monroe hosts an annual cheese festival to honor this great gift to the world.
