About Monterey Park
A city in the west San Gabriel Valley, Monterrey Park was once described as the first "Suburban Chinatown". The first city in the continental states to have an Asian majority, Monterrey Park has grown thanks to successive waves of immigration mainly from Taiwan, China and Vietnam.

The first settlement was founded by a Pony Express Rider named Richard Garvey who liked the look of the land around Monterrey Pass when he rode through. Garvey Avenue is the present site of the trail, which was developed by the first Asian farmers in the 1920s.

Planned for development as a garden community to rival Bel Air and Beverly Hills, Monterrey Park stagnated until the first influx of affluent Asian Americans in the 1980s. The waves of growth spurred by immigration swelled the area into a metropolis of over 60,000.
