About Monticello
Named after the residence of Thomas Jefferson, the village of Monticello lies at the "gateway to the Catskills." A word created by Jefferson from the Latin words for "mountain" and "heaven", Monticello occupies a site carefully selected by the founders.

The brothers Jones were contracted to survey the area for the building of a turnpike road and built Monticello at a key junction, anticipating the creation of Sullivan County. Monticello became the county seat for the new county.

Monticello prospered around the turn of the century due to its ability to attract visitors to the Catskills area. Perhaps the most famous visitors were the thousands who attended the Woodstock festival in 1969, just a few miles from the historic Monticello raceway.
