Mt Vernon City - City Court

About Mount Vernon
Just north of the Bronx, Mt. Vernon is the eighth most populous city in New York State. One of the fastest growing cities in New York, the economy of Mt. Vernon grew by 20% between the years of 2000 and 2006.

Divided by the New Haven Railway line, Mt. Vernon was split into two camps of new residents in the 1960s. African-Americans from the south came to Mt. Vernon seeking opportunity and took up residence on the south side of the tracks while Caucasians from the Bronx and Manhattan moved to Mt. Vernon on the north side of the tracks.

Today, Mt. Vernon is seen as a prototype of the new American city, bearing great ethnic diveristy. The city still shows a remarkable contrast between the north and south halves, but the population is much more diverse thanks to new waves of immigration and what side of the tracks you are on is no longer of any great importance.
