About Muncie
The Delaware Indians who had been transported from their tribal lands to Ohio and eastern Indiana first settled Muncie, Indiana in 1770’s. Several towns were formed along the White River one was called Munsee Town. Some believe that the town was named after mythological Chief Munsee, but the town was actually named after Munsee Town.

Muncie was the center of several studies conducted between 1978 and 1997. The studies were called the “Middletown Studies” and analyzed the social changes in middle town America.

In the late 19th century Muncie’s economic backbone was industry, primarily manufacturing. However due to the fall of the manufacturing industry in the late 20th century Muncie had to find a new economic source. The town now relies on the service industries like health care, education, and retail to support the local economy.
