About New York
America's largest city since 1790, New York was also the US capital for five years. The world center of finance and trade, several New York city icons are recognizable worldwide. The Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Wall Street, Central Park and Broadway are all representative of New York's place as global leader in entertainment and economics.

Established as New Amsterdam by the Dutch, it was surrendered to the English in 1664 and renamed for the Duke of York. After the Revolutionary War the importance of New York as an international port grew, especially when the Erie Canal linked the interior and its agricultural produce. The population swelled through immigration and after World War II New York was the undisputed heavyweight of the word economy.
