About Niagara Falls
A city built on the power of the world's largest waterfalls, Niagara Falls grew up around the hydro power industry. By the end of the 19th century the area was home to many chemical industries using the falls for cheap power.

The toxic waste from that industry created a national emergency in the 1970s, as the housing development of Love Canal, built on landfill of toxic waste, was creating a health crisis for its residents.

Unlike the Niagara Falls across the border, called the Las Vegas of Canada for its hotels and casinos, Niagara Falls, New York has only recently begun to develop tourist attractions. The Seneca Nation has taken the lead, creating a casino in the old convention center.
