About North Manchester
North Manchester, Indiana is a small town in Wabash County with a total population just over 6,000. The Miami Indians were the first known residents of the Manchester area. Richard Helvey was the first non-Indian to settle in the Manchester area. Peter Ogan, the town’s proprietor, filed for the original plat in 1837.

Maurice Place and his son Isaac operated one of the three Underground Railroad Stations that passed through Wabash County, out of North Manchester. The station was located on the Place property, that plus Place’s knowledge of the local trails gave Maurice a good reputation in the Underground Railroad.
