About North Tonawanda
Once the largest port on the Great Lakes, North Tonawanda prospered during the heyday of the Erie Canal. Taking its name from the Iroquois for "swift waters", Tonawanda Creek was once known for its fierce rapids until subdued by the Erie Canal. Also called the "Lumber City" this port was a major shipping point for the lumber processed in the area.

There are a number of historic places of interest in the city, dating back to the golden days of the port. The Allan Herschel Caousel Factory is now a museum of what was the world's largest manufacturer of wooden carousels. The city was also home to the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company's factory for the production of organs, an example of which is installed in the historic Riviera Theater.

There are many historic mansions and buildings in this city as the residents have worked to preserve the historic icons of their golden past.
