About Nyack
A name meaning simply "A Point of Land", Nyack is the native name for a cluster of five villages and hamlets near the mouth of the Hudson River. Provider of much of the sandstone used to build New York City, Nyack was also a major shipbuilding center during World War II.

Realist painter Edward Hopper was born and raised in Nyack and his home is now an art museum while the spacious gardens of the estate host jazz concerts on summer nights. The oldest house still standing in Nyack is the John Green House, built in 1817 of local sandstone.

Where the mouth of the Hudson River widens is referred to as the Tappan Zee, so named by Dutch explorers after the Tappan people who lived there in the pre-colonial times. Nyack is on the west shore of this body of water, across from Sleepy Hollow.
