About Oakland
Named for the oak forests that covered its hills, the city of Oakland was soon stripped of those timbers to build the neighboring city of San Francisco. The exposed lands were found to be some of the most fertile in all of California and Oakland became a thriving agricultural center.

The terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad, Oakland became a thriving port by dealing with the commerce and logistics of San Francisco's growth as a center of finance and culture. During the war years, migrant workers swelled the population of the city, employed in the burgeoning areospace and defence industries.

Immigrants from across the globe diversified the population, creating a working class melting pot that has overcome struggles with crime and drugs to become a vibrant city in its own right.
