About Penn Yan
The curiously named village of Penn Yan derives its moniker from an abbreviation of "Pennsylvania Yankee." Most of the early settlers came from either Pennsylvania or New England, known as Yankees after the War of Independence, and the name was chosen to include both groups.

Many of the earliest settlers in the area were followers of charismatic evangelist Jemima Wilkinson. A Quaker from Rhode Island, Wilkinson preached a message of universal friendship and welcomed all who came to hear her speak. Her following grew to the point where they set off in search of a village of their own, founding Jerusalem at a nearby locale across from Keuka Lake.

Many Amish and Mennonite families have moved to the area recently, drawn by the availability of cheaper farmland. Penn Yann is the county seat of Yates County and has been since 1823.
