El Dorado County - Board of Supervisors

About Placerville
The county seat of El Dorado County, Placerville was one of the largest cities in California when it incorporated in 1854. A wild frontier town that grew up overnight with the Gold Rush, the spot was named "Dry Diggins" in reference to the method of extracting gold.

As the spot grew in notoriety, the name Blood and Guts was appplied to prepare visitors to the wildness of the frontier town. As the town grew, and crime rates with it, it became known simply as Hangtown, due to the many hangings that occurred there.

As the town began to settle into a semblance of respectability, the church groups pushed for a more family friendly name and Placerville was chosen. The town has several museums and historic places and the old railroad has been restored as a tourist run.
