About Plattsburgh
On the shores of Lake Champlain near the Quebec border, the city of Plattsburgh has a French heritage that is unique amongst American cities. Founded by French fur-traders as a trading post, there are still memorials in the city to French heroes Samuel de Champlain and le Marquis de Montcalm.

The city's War of 1812 Museum is dedicated to the events of the area during the conflict between the USA and Canada. The Battle of Plattsburgh was a naval confrontation at the end of the War, British and American naval forces had also clashed near here during the American Revolutionary War.

During the Cold War, an air force base was built near Plattsburgh and became the primary installation for strategic air defence on the East Coast. Plattsburgh was one of only four air force bases with the facilities to accomodate a space shuttle landing. Now closed, the area is used by commercial airlines as well as manufacturing companies.
