About Poughkeepsie
The Queen City of the Hudson, Poughkeepsie was the second capital of New York State after the War for Independence. Spared the ravages of battle during the War, it was chosen as the meeting place for the ratification of the United States Constitution. The courthouse on Market Street is where New York State became the eleventh state in 1788.

A flourishing center of industry in the 1800s, it was also a favorite site of summer homes for the wealthy of New York City. Known for its natural beauty and prized for its short commute to the city, Poughkeepsie boasted residencies built by the Astors and the Vanderbilts.

The Bardavon Opera House occupies a special place in the history of performing arts, being the oldest continually used theatre in America. Built in 1869, it was decorated with a mural honoring Shakespeare, aka the Bard of Avon, and took its name from a shortened version of the name.
