About Rensselaer
Rensselaer, Indiana was originally called Newton and was renamed after James Van Rensselaer, a merchant from New York. The town was formed on the rapids of the Iroquois River and became the county seat for Jasper County.

Katherine Drexel who donated 50,000 for the education of Catholic American Indian boys established St. Joseph’s Indian Normal School in 1888. It was later used as a dormitory for St. Joseph’s College but it fell into disrepair and was condemned. Years later it was renovated and turned into the Rensselaer Adult Learning Center. A plaque still stands in front of the building honoring the St. Joseph’s Indian Normal School.
