About Richmond
In 1806 many Quaker families traveled from North Carolina to the East Fork of the White River, which is now called Richmond, Indiana. Many Quaker institutions still exist in Richmond like the Friends Untied Meeting, Earlham College and Earlham School of Religion.
Music is a big part of Richmond. It is often called the “Cradle of Recorded Jazz” because some early jazz records were produced there in the Gennett Records Studio. Richmond also has the distinction of being the smallest town to support a professional opera company and symphony orchestra. The Whitewater Opera has since closed but the Richmond Symphony Orchestra continues to perform.
Although music plays an important part in Richmond’s history art does as well. Several artists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were labeled the Richmond Group and the Richmond Art Museum has an impressive collection, including a self-portrait by William Merritt Chase.
