About Ronkonkoma
Named after an idyllic lake in central Long Island, Ronkonkoma is one of the more evocative names of New York State. The first European settlers to stand on the shores Lake Ronkonkoma found the spot to be highly revered by the natives and were duly impressed by the purity of the waters and the beauty of the surrounding area.

Legend has it that the lake is bottomless and enchanted and was the scene of an ill-fated love affair between an early settler and a native princess. The lovers allegedly drowned in the lake and the water levels rise when theie tears overflow. The lake does have strange fluctuations in surface levels, irregardless of rainfall.

With the building of the Long Island Railroad, the lake became a summer getaway for the rich and famous, a status which was elevated to resort town with the building of the highway. Today, the area is industrialized yet retains some vestiges of the beauty and mystery of its origins.
