About Rushville
Located in Rush County with a population of 5,995 like Rushville, Indiana. It is named after Dr. Benjamin Rush who signed the Declaration of Independence. Located along the Flatrock River the town only consists of 2.2 square miles.
Wendell Willkie’s, a 1940 presidential candidate, ran his campaign against Franklin D. Roosevelt from Rushville. He is currently buried in the city’s East Hill Cemetery. He still remains the only presidential candidate to be a native of Indiana and be nominated for the national party.
Frazier Thomas was also a native of Rushville. The radio and television personality hosted such long running shows as “Garfield Goose and Friends” and took over as circus manager for “Bozo’s Circus” when Ned Locke retired.
Rushville has many notable residents but most widely known may be Nascar driver Tony Stewart. Known as the “Rushville Rocket” Tony grew up in Columbus, Indiana but began his racing career in Rushville and even has a small drive next to the local high school named after him.
