Salem, Indiana is an agricultural community that is surrounded by Indiana forests, farmland and small bodies of water. Most of the crops grown in this area are either corn or soybeans and the homes in Salem although varied in style often have a Victorian design.
Although Salem is a small town “Riley’s Place” at DePauw Park is not small. “Riley’s Place” is a very large playground named after Riley Jean Tomlinson, a local toddler who accidentally drowned in a swimming pool. The park contains the usual swings, slides and similar playground equipment with one exception, a two and three story wooden castle that is the highlight of the park.
Lake Salinda, which lies in Salem, is home to the Salinda Serpent. Residents and visitors rumor the Salinda Serpent to be a giant snake that resides in the lake and is occasionally seen.
