About San Leandro
A suburb of the Bay area, San Leandro was the county seat of Alameda until the Hayward Quake of 1868 destroyed the capitol buildings. Neighboring Brooklyn became the county seat after the disaster and has retained that status. Relations between the two communities have been strengthened over the years and San Leandro and Brooklyn fielded a joint militia during the American Civil War.

San Leandro's population swelled in the 1950s, however those residents who moved here at that time have stayed and the demographic is markedly older. Recent immigration of Asian and Afro Americans have helped to bring the average age of San Leandro down in recent years.
