About Saratoga Springs
Famed for its spas, casinos and horse racing, Saratoga Springs was founded as a place of healing. The first European to discover the beneficial effects of the waters was Sir William Johnson, a British soldier who was taken to the place by his Iroquois friends in order to help his healing from war wounds.

In the 1900s, European style bath houses and spa treatments began to proliferate in the area, necessitating the building of two of the largest hotels in America to house the tourist trade. Saratoga Race Course opened in 1863 and gambling on the horses soon gave rise to the growth of casinos and nightclubs, making Saratoga Springs the Las Vegas of New York.

Reinvented as a center of culture in the 1960s, the city now houses the National Museum of Dance and the famed Yaddo colony of artists occupies the former racegrounds.
