About Scottsburg
30 miles south of Louisville, Kentucky lies the city of Scottsburg, Indiana. Scottsburg was named after Horace Scott who was president of the Jeffersonville, Madison, and Indianapolis Railroad.
In 1872 the Scott County Home was built to replace the previous County Home that had been located in Lexington, Indiana. Often called the “Poor Farm” the county home was originally used to house the poor and indigent as well as the mentally and physically handicapped. Today it is the Scott County Heritage Center and Museum.
Scottsburg is also where the famous Pigeon Roost Massacre occurred shortly after the War of 1812 began. In September of 1812 a war party of mostly Shawnee Indians attacked the village of Pigeon Roost and killed 24 settlers. The leader of the attack was named Missilemotaw and he was captured in September 1813 where he eventually confessed to having led the raid.
