About Spencer
Spencer, Indiana is nestled along the banks of the White River in eastern Owen County. As the county seat, the Owen County Courthouse lies on the square in downtown Spencer. Located 55 miles southwest of Indianapolis, it is flanked by Bloomington to the east and Terre Haute to the west.

The Green Bluff Preserve is just one of the nature preserves in Spencer. Green’s Bluff is a large wooded riparian habitat with uplands, ravines, tributary valleys, steep cliffs, karst features, hemlock forest and floodplain forest. The preserve also features a great blue heron rookery as well as an old grist mill whose remnants can be found in a bend of Raccoon Creek.

Wolf’s Cave Nature Preserve is one of the other nature preserves located in Spencer. Wolf Cave is a small underground opening for water that enters from a wet-weather stream and emerges a short distance below in a secluded valley. A natural bridge has formed where the water emerges that is a very popular spot in the preserve. Beech trees dominate the cool slopes with doting on red oak, white ash, tulips, sugar maples, and hackberries while sycamore, red elm, and black walnut dominate the narrow valleys.
