About Staten Island
One of the five boroughs of New York City, Staten Island is the least populous of the boroughs despite being the third largest in size. An island to the south of Manhattan, Staten Island's Ferry connects the two islands and makes the region a popular tourist spot for its views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Staaten Eylandt was named by the Dutch to honor their Parliament, called the Staten-Generaal. Largely unsettled, it was used as a base for the capture of New York by the British during the Revolutionary War and remained a British base throughout. The Conference House on the southern tip of the island marks the spot where Benjamin Franklin and others met with the British commander Admiral Howe to discuss the potential for peace.

The construction of the Verrezano Bridge and the building of highways after consolidation with New York City has created a thriving suburb in Staten Island, in place of the dairy farms and poultry farms that once dominated the landscape. One famous feature of the island is the F.D.R. Boardwalk, one of the longest seaside promenades in the world.
