About Syracuse
The economic and educational hub of central New York State, Syracuse is the fifth largest city in the state. A major crossoroads for land, air and water transportation, Syracuse also hosts the annual New York State Fair.

Syracuse University is a major research university and one of the area's major employers, but there are also several smaller colleges and professional schools in the area. Upstate Medical University is a prestigious medical school, one of only a few in upstate New York.

Named after the city in Sicily made famous in the literature of Ancient Greece, Syracuse was initially a source of salt. Until the early 1900s, the bulk of the salt used in the USA came from the slat mines near Syracuse. Manufacturers were drawn to the city in the 20th century due to its ideal location at the apex of the canal and railway connections.
