About Terre Haute
Terra Haute, Indiana was named after 18th century French explorers. The name means High Land in French, and refers to the plateau like rise of the land near the Wabash River. The town was platted in 1816 and was an agricultural and pork packing center. However when Terra Haute became a town in 1832 the economy was more industrial and mining.

Terre Haute entered a period of economic decline once the coal mines were spent and the importance of the railroads diminished. The town was labeled a "bad labor town" following the Terra Haute General Strike of 1935 and the city center began a decline which it just recently has started to recover from.

The Terra Haute Federal Correctional Complex is home to the federal death row. Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City Bomber, was executed in Terra Haute.
