About Troy
One of the three cities that form the Capital District, Troy has close links with nearby Albany and Schenectady. At the headwaters of the Hudson, the city has a proud tradition of manuufacturing and educational excellence.

First settled by the Dutch in the mid 1600s, patron Kiliaen van Rensselaer gave his name to the county and also to the city's polytechnical institute which is still considered a leader in the area of technological excellence. The Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute was founded by his descendant Stephen in 1824, the same man who commanded the local militia in the War of 1812. The quartermaster for the troops, Sam Wilson, was referred to as Uncle Sam by the soldiers giving credence to the claim that Americans first began to fight for Uncle Sam in Troy.

Troy, named for the ancient city made famous in the Iliad, was also the place of residence for famed novelist Kurt Vonnegut, who referred to the city, a favorite setting, as Ilium.
