About Utica
Neigboring the city of Rome, Utica was named after a city in Carthage, historical rival to the Roman Republic. Founded on the fording point of the Mohawk River, the village grew from the establishment of a blacksmith's pub at the crossing, which offered cold ale and freshly forged horseshoes to weary travellers.

In the early 1800s the town became the destination for a wave of Welsh immigrants, who brought their dairy farming techniques and made Utica butter a hot commodity. The building of the Erie Canal caused the population to skyrocket and established Utica as a major manufacturing center.

With the departure of the textile and tool and die industries that underpinned the local economy, Utica became the poster city for the "Rust Belt." Sporting bumper stickers with the gallows humor catchphrase "The last one out of Utica turn off the lights", residents of Utica have seen the major employers and many of the residents leave, but have kept their sense of humor.
