About Wantagh
Wantagh is also called the "Gateway to Jones Beach" for its close proximity to the famous State Park, the most popular and heavily visited beach on the east coast. Wantaugh Parkway runs beside the beach and requires visitors to pass under the shadow of the Jones Beach Water Tower, a famous landmark of the area.

Named Wantagh by the natives of the area, the early settlers dubbed the place Jerusalem. The Jackson and Seaman families were the original inhabitants of the area and their names feature prominently in the history of Wantagh. The local shopping mall is named Cherrywood after Captain John Seaman's estate of the same name that once occupied the area. The original home of Robert Jackson, built in 1644, is preserved as a historical site.
