About Watertown
An early economic powerhouse of Upper New York State, Watertwon is named for the many waterfalls of the Black River, the source of power for its early industries. Early water driven mills led to expansion of the city and development of other industries, including the world's first portable steam engine.

Retail giant Frank W. Woolworth got his start in Watertown. While working as a clerk in Moore's Store, he set up a clearamce display of low-priced items and realized the success of cut-rate merchandise. The first Woolworth's was opened in Utica in 1879, but Watertown is the home of the Five and Dime, the safety pin and Little Trees Car Fresheners.

Today, Watertown is the nearest town to the Fort Drum Military Reserve and it's historic properties have been restored for the enjoyment of the many tourists who pass through to the Thousand Islands.
