About Yonkers
A city north of the Bronx, Yonkers takes its name from the Dutch word for "Esquire". The land was originally granted to a young gentleman named Adrian van Donck, a "Jonckheer" in Dutch, and the are was referred to as the "Jonckheer's Land."

Near the site of the van Donck saw mill is a colonial-era estate once owned by Frederick Philipse, a prominent Loyalist family who had their property confiscated after the Revolutionary War. The manor is now an historical museum.

An industrial center that has become a suburban community, Yonkers has had a large influence on America's entertainmet industry. The first FM Radio broadcast came from Yonkers, as did notable singers and songwriters such as Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Kruppa, W.C. Handy, Steven Tyler and even Lady GaGa.
